Cycle to Work FAQs
Your employer buys a bike and equipment on your behalf. You then sacrifice salary each month to pay for it over a set period (usually 12–24 months). Because the payments come from pre-tax salary, you save income tax and National Insurance on the full amount.
Most schemes allow purchases up to £1,000 without additional checks. Some employers offer higher limits (£2,000–£5,000) for e-bikes and cargo bikes. The government removed the old £1,000 cap in 2019.
Bikes (including electric bikes), helmets, locks, lights, panniers, cycling clothing, and other safety equipment. The bike must be used mainly for commuting to work to qualify.
